If you've never used this stuff, you should - it's a miracle of modern technology. These images show how this works - the sheet is dimpled, and somehow adhesives have been selectively applied to the troughs. It's not sticky until you press the troughs down onto the surface.

Great stuff, it was 15 below zero and my dog needed to go for a walk. In that temp, the ice and snow would sting her paws after two minutes. I rapped her paws in the wrap and it was enough to protect her feet until she could do her business.
